M.C. Martin’s reality cartoon Guy Moments has gone viral over the past couple months, as episodes have hit over 700,000 streams. The show is based on group of friends navigating through bachelorhood, dating, and marriage.
PBH2 sat down with M.C. Martin to discuss how the show came to pass, the importance of “reality cartoons” in today’s culture, new characters that will be introduced to the show and more.
I heard that Guy Moments was originally a movie script, is that true?
Guy Moments: Yeah it was originally a movie script. I was in the 10th or 11th grade and I told my brother I wanted to write a script. My brother told me to write about all the crazy stuff that I went through with the women I talk to, as he thought I went through some pretty hilarious stuff.
Was it supposed to be a full cartoon movie or real-life people movie?
GM: I wanted to mix it between part real people and part cartoon. I tried shopping it around to studios in California but I wasn’t getting any feedback from them. I decided after meeting up with some friends to just turn it into five-minute portions of audio and roll with that. A radio station heard it and wanted to play it on their show. We let it fly like that for like 6 months, but decided to switch it to a cartoon so it would catch on quicker.
Guy Moments is derived from real life events making it a “reality cartoon.” Do you feel as if you are one of the leaders in this genre?
GM: For a while we were bogged down with shows that people couldn’t relate to and then reality television took over. In regards to reality cartoons, we are one of the first. I basically bring you the situations you and your next-door neighbor go through.
